Author Topic: Support for new font types in Haali, or another splitter...  (Read 2350 times)

Haali media splitter (current version 1.11.288.0) fails to load fonts labeled as "application/x-font-ttf" or "application/vnd.ms-opentype", which other splitters like LAV/AV/Gabest can load.

When MKVToolNix 5.1+ defaulted to "application/x-font-ttf" & "application/vnd.ms-opentype", this problem became apparent.  Since Haali fails to load those fonts, new subtitled MKV releases using the latest MKVToolNix that are not manually corrected to "application/x-truetype-font" by the encoder are broken and the fonts do not display correctly.  This requires viewers to manually extract the fonts and install them so that they appear correctly.

Do you know if the Haali splitter is being updated to fix this problem and if so would it be included in a future CCCP release?  If not, would the default splitter be changed to something that supports these font labels?

From what I have heard, this was fixed in MKVToolNix v5.2.0? Anyway, someone will look into this..

When asking for help, please do the following:
1. Open the video in MPC-HC and tell me what items are listed in the menu: 'Play-> Filters.'
Download the CCCP Insurgent and:
2. Tools > Media Information > "problem file"
3. Tools > Test Render > "problem file"
4. Tools > CRC Check > "problem file"
5. File > Save Log
6. Open the log you just saved in Notepad and copy the entire contents into your next post.

In version 5.2, MKVToolNix made this fix:

   * mkvmerge, mmg: bug fix: Automatic MIME type recognition for
TrueType fonts will result in "application/x-truetype-font" again
instead of "application/x-font-ttf". Fix for bug 682.

So MKVToolNix will label TrueType fonts so that Haali will understand them again.  But Haali will not understand OpenType fonts.  It still fails to load "application/x-font-ttf" or "application/vnd.ms-opentype".  Even today, subtitled MKV files are released in which the fonts don't display.  I am hoping that Haali is updated to fix this but so far have seen no news about it.

More information here in this linked thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1545839#post1545839

If Haali isn't updated, is there a possibility of the use of another splitter to be included in the CCCP as an option?

mkvtoolnix fixed that, problem is haali never bothered to make his splitter compatible with OTF fonts, so when you mux them, you'll have to change their mime type to application/x-truetype-font if you want them to be loaded or they won't.
Haali will only load TTF and TTC mime types, nothing else.

CoreCodec is holding onto a bug-fixed version of Haali Splitter, which they plan to release with the long overdue CoreAVC 3.1.

I'd hope this is one of the things which was fixed, since it was reported long ago, but maybe someone could get confirmation from BetaBoy @Doom9.

Well, I think since haali now joined CoreAVC and became somehow a commercial product, it would be good to begin to look for alternatives, alternatives that would be updated more often also.

Keep in mind that Matroska (MKV) is also owned and controlled by CoreCodec, but neither MKV or Haali Splitter ever became commercial products, as both are freely available to download and use.

I don't expect to see a proper MKV replacement for Haali Splitter anytime soon. LAV Splitter is missing a lot of features used in fansubs which nevcairiel has stated he has little interest in ever supporting, and AV Splitter has a lot of quirks/bugs. That CoreCodec has taken over development and bugfixing Haali Splitter, with occasional help from Haali himself, I see as a good thing.
