Bit of a noob question about LAV

I finally downloaded the latest version of CCCP (I've been using 10-10-10 since forever hahaha). I usually don't tinker with any settings in the codec pack, but I noticed in the release notes that the LAV decoder is by default 'off'.

If I want to watch hi10p videos, I need to make sure that LAV is enabled right? Or does it enable itself automatically at need?

If I enable it in the CCCP settings, are there any possible cons to leaving it enabled all the time? Does it make any difference (good/bad) to non-hi10p videos? Or does it just burn a lot of extra processing power?

Hi10P works with both FFDShow-tryouts as well as LAV (FFDShow-tryouts patched by Lord was the first open source DirectShow thing to play back Hi10P in May 2011). LAV was added to be the new splitter for certain things in the 2011-11-11 package, and as the other filters were worth putting in (off by default, as larger changes should be done one-by-one), I added a LAV Video H.264 decoder checkbox.

It is a more streamlined and often better-working alternative to FFDShow-tryouts (unless you need the video filters that FFDShow-tryouts can deliver). The version in the 2011-11-11 release does have a little bug with a certain bit depth conversion, but this is a very small thing (and I reported it to nevcairiel and it is fixed by now). Use whichever decoder you happen to like :) . The possibility of LAV Video being the default in the next package release is very, very high.

So if I enable LAV, my MPC will favour the LAV codecs above FFDShow for hi10p vids? Or is it a smart selection where it'll do its best to match the most compatible codec?

It will just disable H.264 decoding in FFDShow-tryouts, and enable it in LAV Video -- as simple as that :)
