Certain videos won't play; can't figure out why
« on: May 17, 2006, 11:39:29 PM »
Hello CCCP guys, here's the situation:

I watch quite a bit of anime. The CCCP has helped me tremendously with that, because before this, I haven't come across a video it cannot play.

However, now I find it isn't playing files I have had it play before. Whenever I double click on one of these files, MPC opens and closes. No error message, either. MPC opens and looks like it's trying to load the video, but then it closes. Very odd.

I have had some other codec packs in this install before. I used to be a K-Lite person, until I found the CCCP. I completely purged all K-Lite stuff (I'm pretty sure), and nothing seemed to faze the CCCP, not even installing Divx and Xvid (another app wanted Xvid for encoding purposes, and I had been given a free Divx Pro key).

Now after uninstalling them, it hasn't fixed the problem. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CCCP (always the latest one).

Here's an Insurgent scan:

(click to show/hide)

I don't think the files are the problem, as several of these files were working a couple weeks ago, but it's a possibility.

Here's some file names:

[a.f.k.] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - 02.avi

[a.f.k.] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - 03.avi

[a.f.k.] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - 06.avi

[S-R]Naruto_1x34_-_Akamaru_Trembles,_Gaara's_Cruel_Strength!_[By_CHIPPER]_[E18D06C3].avi

All of them are Xvid Mpeg4 for video and Mp3 for audio. The only difference I see between them (in AVIcodec) is that the Haruhi episodes audio is at 48000hz, and the Naruto episode is at 44100hz.

I used Insurgent to Test Render and CRC Check, but I didn't get any errors.

thanks in advance for the help, and just let me know if you need more information.  :)

Firstly, great work on the information included :D. It's always a pleasure too see a Good Question (tm) :). Unfortunately, you missed a test render. Can you do a test render of one of the [afk] files and the naruto file? Its in the tools menu of the Insurgent.
This seems like a pretty random problem, you should try updating your video card drivers and uninstalling & reinstalling DirectX if you have no qualms about doing so (at this stage, it's merely a stab in the dark though).

Here's the results of the test renders:

For Haruhi episode 2
(click to show/hide)

For Haruhi Episode 3
(click to show/hide)

For Haruhi Episode 6
(click to show/hide)

and for Naruto
(click to show/hide)

Yeah, I was thinking of doing a full system wipe and reinstall, to see if that gets me anywhere, but I'll try the video drivers first (not sure about how to uninstall and reinstall DirectX though).

Before anything else, try in zoomplayer.
Also, check you've run through the general troubleshooting steps here: http://cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Issues:Main_Page

The test renders are all clean, as is your system. Work back over what you installed between when you know the files worked and now (I think windows restore keeps a list of programs installed). Nevertheless, it's strange that eps 2,3,6 fail whereas (presumably) 1,4,5,etc do not. Even stranger is the fact the CRCs check out.
Also, download graphedt (http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide#Using_GraphEdit_to_check_what_the_filter_graph_looks_like) and see if trying to open one of the video files in that crashes it too.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, are you using any custom settings anywhere?

Ok, I updated my nvidia drivers, and downloaded the latest DirectX, and just for good measure, uninstalled/reinstalled CCCP again.

zoomplayer works, and oddly enough, so does Windows Media Player 11 Beta. That's really weird, I thought that WMP needed the codec installed to render Xvid/Divx, and I removed those.

MPC still opens and then closes (maybe that's where the problem is?).

GraphEdit opens and plays all four of the videos without a problem.

By custom settings, you mean in CCCP? the only thing I have it not display the FFDshow/Hali icons in the tray.

This is a bit of a weird problem, if ZP works then MPC should as well. Are you sure you are using the version included in the pack? If you haven't been before, try reinstalling the pack and resetting your settings on install. Since graphedit works, it means the files check out, and the problem is with MPC.

Yeah, it's definetly the MPC that comes with the pack.

But then, just to see, I tried downloading it separately, and that MPC didn't work either.

EDIT: looks like keeper may save the day...

MPC uses his own filter graph building algorithm which sometimes chokes when it encounters multiple filters that can do the same thing.

First try, use the CCCP settings manager and disable MP3 decoding there (uncheck that box). Try to play the file in mpc and see if it works. If that didin't do it, then enable the avi splitter built in MPC (View -> Options -> Internal Filters -> place a check on the AVI option).

Last and final thing, if you got no results up to this point: uninstall Avi2DVD, uninstall CCCP, rebbot and then install CCCP again and agree to reset settings when asked to. See if you still have issues with MPC after this.

PS: On a second thought, you should perform the avi2dvd uninstall anyway since it installed many things that borked CCCP.

Well, I wasn't using avi2dvd anyway, so I installed it. No change.

Tried disabling the MP3 decoding in CCCP. No change.

enabling the avi splitter in MPC...that did it! It's working!

thanks for all the help, check and keeper. :-)

Must have been some poorly muxed avi files then (read: avi files that are not compliant with the microsoft avi splitter)

You also seem to have installed WMP 11. Did the files work before installing it ?

Is there any downside to using the MPC avi splitter, or anything I should look out for while it's enabled?

I don't know if they worked in WMP10, cause I never used it. They do work in WMP11, and I notice that WMP11 actually uses ffdshow while playing them.

The only players I had before were MPC, WMP10, and portable VLC (which they did work in).

It will not work properly with some files. But you see, there are 3 avi splitters out there: the one microsoft packs with Windows, the gabest one (the one inside MPC), and Haali's avi splitter. They all bork on certain files and work on others. ^^

Which one you intend to use it's up to you as they are all imperfect. But usually encoders try to make their files compatible with microsoft's avi splitter (and unfortunatelly sometimes they fail). That's why CCCP makes use of microsoft's avi splitter.

There must be something borked with MPC filter graph building then.
