Error creating EVR Custom renderer
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:40:41 AM »

This problem pops up on all the videos I try to open.

I get this error message (This actually appears twice in a row)

Header: Error creating EVR Custom renderer

Could not find MFCreateDXSurfaceBuffer (evr.dll)
Could not find MFCreateVideoSampleFromSurface (evr.dll)
Could not find MFCreateVideoMediaType (evr.dll)

0x80004005

This doesn't really stop me from playing the file, but it is annoying so I switched back to EVR(Vista/.Net3)
View -> Options -> Output -> EVR(Vista/.Net3)

I would like to ask for some help in pin-pointing the problem and get some solutions to this.

When asking for help, please do the following:
1. Open the video in MPC-HC and tell me what items are listed in the menu: 'Play-> Filters.'
Download the CCCP Insurgent and:
2. Tools > Media Information > "problem file"
3. Tools > Test Render > "problem file"
4. Tools > CRC Check > "problem file"
5. File > Save Log
6. Open the log you just saved in Notepad and copy the entire contents into your next post.

Post a log from Insurgent, and did you update your DirectX runtime after installing windows there?

I have already updated my DirectX using the Febuary 2010 release before posting here.

Did EVR-Custom work in the past on that particular installation of Windows?

All of a sudden I started having the same exact problem.  I was able to play files fine last night then when I turned my PC on today I started getting this error.  Not sure why it's happening as I didn't make any changes to my PC.  I first tried restoring to an earlier point but it didn't help.  I then tried the directx end user runtime and reinstalled my gfx drivers, still no luck.  If I change the output to EVR(Vista/.Net3) it works but the video looks very jagged.  So I've been using the Haali renderer and it seems ok.  The overlay mixer seems to work as well but I don't like windows switching off Aero all the time.

Even more strange I went to try windows media player and I can't even launch the program now!  I get setup_wm.exe - bad image error.  C:\windows\system32\MFPlat.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.  I only use MPC-HC but I just find it odd all this happened out of the blue.

Would love to hear if anyone else was having this issue and resolved it.

Post a log too. And a CRC of the evr.dll file, assuming you really get the exact same messages.

Here you go...

CRC of C:\Windows\System32\evr.dll is 19105572

as Insurgent reports it.

use a dependency checker,  and gather up dependencies in system32 folder under windows, then use "regsvr32 evr.dll"

I have exactly the same problems.

Until now, I have tried following approaches:
    - reinstalled video driver
    - reinstalled CCCP
    - update DirectX

None of them solved my problem. EVR was working on this computer with Win 7 Prof x64.

Now, I am running Win 7 Enterprise N x86.

Below is my computer configuration details. Any piece of advice / help is greatly appreciated.

Please post up a CCCP Insurgent log. (In CCCP Insurgent - File-> Save log and upload that txt file somewhere) The CCCP Insurgent can be found in the green bubble at  http://www.cccp-project.net/

Windows 7 N(no WMP included) users must install the "Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N and Windows 7 KN (KB968211)" to fix EVR renderer support not being available on their OS.

Hi there!

I was not expecting such a quick reply. Thank you.

I did some searches and I discovered that 'evr.dll' comes with the Windows Media Codec Packages.
Since I use Win Enterprise N, I do not have these codec packs installed.

Here are some download links (for some, this might be the solution to the problem) to install these codec packages.

For Windows 7 N or KN
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=31017ed3-166a-4c75-b90c-a6cef9b414c4

For Windows Media Player 12
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=13beb697-e897-40a8-81b5-c20a0529f599

For Windows Media Player 11
http://anonym.to/http://www.citizeninsomniac.com/WMV/wmfdist11.exe

For Windows Media Player 9
http://www.video-converter.net/wmfdist.exe

However, I could not install this package. I am working around with the error code. I will try again later ... who knows.

Anyway, here is the requested log file:

If you can't use the EVR video renderer, you can try switch to Overlay, Haali's Renderer or madVR.
