I'm playing it in MPC, but I can't get subtitles for mkv files.  I tried what scorp did but it didn't work.

This works if you want to use the internal VSFilter. Anyone have success getting the external one to load with MPC? Forcing autoload doesn't do anything.

This is what I did in MPC-HC. For now it seems to have done the trick:

1. View | Options
2. Go to External Filters
3. Hit Add Filter...
4. Choose DirectVobSub (auto-loading version)
5. Where it says Prefer/Block/Set merit:, select Prefer

Hope that helps.

I find that if your picture is "fuzzy" or looks like it has "scan-lines" imposed on this when using this workaround and CoreAVC you need to change something else

View | Options
Playback > Output
Select EVR under the DirectShow Video section

I have to figure out was EVR exactly is (all I see so far is something on VLC implementing it in the future)

cccp seems to work well with it.
i'd love to get subs working in wmp but it doesn't seem to like vsfilter.

VSFilter DOES work under wmp12 and wmc. Make sure you enabled Autoload VSFilter on the 2nd page of the Settings application.
