Sorry for delay in responding.

Have tried going into Device Manager and removing the device. Made sure to show disconnected and hidden devices.  Removed all copies of the headset.
Rebooted windows.
Reset all settings. (with no other programs open.)
Rebooted again.
Then tried plugging in headset again.

Same problem.

I had previously looked at Sound in Control panel but it didn't give me anything about speakers or virtual speakers for this device.  That is why I asked question.  All Sound says is "Headset Earphone Logitech USB headset".  No configure options or such.

Any other thoughts to try?

It seems to be Logitech USB Headset 250 which seems to be just stereo.

Maybe try uninstall the headset in Device Manager and then unplug and plug it back in. Also, if you didn't before, reset settings with Media Player Classic closed.

You can find out more about what Windows knows about the audio devices with the Sound icon in the Control Panel.

Can't find a model number on it.

Found the model number:
A-0356A

It is a old Logitech headset with 2 speakers and Mic. Windows identifies it as "Logitech USB Headset". Can't find a model number on it. It uses the generic USB Audio driver in windows (never had to load/install anything).

I don't know where in windows to determine how many speakers or virtual speakers it thinks it has. (Feel free to tell me where to look.) I can tell you Windows does know it is stereo headset and playing games and music the left/right stereo works correctly.

In CCCP Settings I see:
2/0/0 - stereo

What model USB headset is it? How many speakers does it have? How many virtual speakers? How many speakers set in Windows and in the CCCP Settings application?

You trick of different speakers has helped to narrow down the problem.

I'm currently using USB headphones as my default speakers.
I also have regular speakers attached to built-in motherboard sound port.
Originally they both behaved exactly the same. Since I did the "Reset All Settings" I had not retested the normal speakers.  But your last post made me go back and retest them.

The normal speakers are now working correctly.  But the USB headphones I still have same problem. So it appears am making progress to fixing.

Hopefully the additional information below will be helpful and maybe you'll have more suggestions so that I can completely resolve it.

That particular video clip I linked to didn't have background music. Was trying to avoid linking to a 650MB movie file. Guess I need to be more exact about the way I described the problem.

If I play the mono track mp4 I get NO sound at all. If play some stereo movie files I get background music and no voices.

So to give you a better working example here is a file from your site that gives exactly the problem I'm describing. I hear the intro music but can't hear the person talking, only on the USB headset. The normal speakers now play everything correctly.

Do you have any other ideas to fix the USB headset?

So, when you play that particular video which has mono audio, there is background music but no talking? I can't think of any way that would be possible...

Did you check in Windows that the correct number of speakers is selected? Also, try unplug your speakers/headphones and try a different pair of headphones/speakers.

I got the sample video from this web page.
http://archive.org/details/Pbtestfilemp4videotestmp4

I used it as example because was simplest/shortest test video I could find that exactly mimic the problem I have on larger movie files. Yes I know the sample I choose has mono audio, but figured if I got it working will probably fix same issue on more complex movie files.

Reset all settings on CCCP. No change.

Something else I discovered was a game I play called TrackMania no longer plays the engine sounds. I still get in game music, but the sounds of engine, hitting barriers and other stuff no longer is working. Figure it is all related.

This particular video could be broken as it only seems to have one channel of audio. Could you please link me to a copy of it so I can test?

Also, try a reset of settings using the CCCP Settings application and then please do step one below.

I'm on Windows Vista 64bit OS,
My MPEG4 files are no longer playing audio for voices in files.  It will still play background music and such in a video, but can't hear anyone talking.

I've done my best to research the internet on this and I think my problem is somehow related to recently installing  iTunes on my Windows PC.  However every suggestion I found says to reload the drivers for sound card and reload the codecs.  I completely removed the sound card and all codec packages from system.  Then reinstalled sound drivers and then ONLY installed CCCP codecs package. Still not working.

I'm hoping someone here has experienced this and solved it.
